STAND, Students Taking A New Direction, is made up of students at the middle school who are committed to promoting healthy choices in young people. This year, these student leaders wanted to do something schoolwide to raise student awareness on the harmful effects of vaping and tobacco use. Juul is an electronic cigarette (vape) company, so they thought of a creative slogan using the first day of April as a launching date. “We thought we could have fun by doing this on April Fool's Day with the play on words,” says Tera Secord, OMS Health teacher and STAND advisor.
The students put up posters throughout the school with information on vaping and tobacco use. They also handed out raffle tickets during lunch on April 1st, and called out numbers throughout the time for students to win prizes. They could win wristbands, frisbees, cards and more promoting a drug-free lifestyle. They also put up an informational display, and created a slideshow with facts about the harmful effects of vaping. The slideshow ran on the TVs in the cafeteria during lunch time.
This effort ran at the same as an organization called Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids put an emphasis that day on promoting tobacco awareness. Here is a link to that website for more information: https://www.tobaccofreekids.org/
