“Kids today preserving the past for the future”. That’s the new motto for the new Otsego Historical Museum’s Junior Board, made up of six Otsego middle and high school students.
This board of students began about a year ago with just three members to explore how they could help generate interest in the museum for a new generation. The board has now grown to six members and they’ve been meeting regularly to brainstorm, and begin developing fun ideas to attract families and peak the interest of kids in history.
The junior board consists of 6th grader Max Bohl, 7th graders Navene Town and Sara McCaw, 8th graders Sadie Jacobs and Madison Gates, and 11th grader McKinley Kinnane.
The kids have developed a scavenger hunt idea for visitors so they can interact with the displays as they explore the museum. A fill-in-the-blank page accompanies the hunt so you learn as you go. They are also developing an image match activity and word search. They are hoping to get these copied and ready to distribute this summer to correspond with the school’s and library’s summer reading program.
In the future, they hope to plan cemetery reenactments to make Otsego’s historical figures come alive to teach others about the rich history of the people who made Otsego what it is today.
