Hazel and Lions Club representative with winning poster

Each year, OMS art students participate in the Lions Club Peace Poster contest. There are local, regional and national levels within this contest and each school has an initial winner.

This year, 6th grader Hazel Knooihuizen won for Otsego. "When I saw I won I was surprised and nervous but also excited," she says.

The theme for this year's contest was "Together as One". Hazel decided to make her painting of a quilt "because I could put multiple images in one." She chose images she thought would make the world a better place being sewn together. “It shows that the ribbon and string and needle all come together to make something beautiful, like how people could come together and make the world a better place,” she said.

Hazel will receive a $50 prize and her artwork will go on to compete against other area schools.
